Bad Apple
Cross Stitch
Collab

How it works

What we're hoping to do is to simplify the frames of the original Bad Apple music video, convert them into cross-stitch patterns, and stitch as many as we can. This way, we can create a handmade, stop-motion version of the animation. To our knowledge, this is the first time anyone has attempted this!To be clear, we are not doing every frame of the video in cross-stitch. A lot of frames will be reused, cut, or merged into one in order to give us a fighting chance. Here are some specifics:--Each pattern will be 86x66 stitches in size.--Some frames are stitched with white floss on black fabric, and some with black floss on white fabric. You'll also need a small amount of a colour like red or green for a few stitches in the corner of each frame.--We will be working with 3 strands of floss on 14-count fabric.--Some frames will be photographed by whoever stitched them, while some will have to be physically sent to Ophi in Taiwan.--For a longer, more in-depth explanation, check out our Info Doc here!

FAQ

What is Bad Apple?
Bad Apple is a music video that is widely known around the internet for being redone in unique and impressive formats. Click here for a playlist with lots of examples.
What skill level is required?
Anyone from absolute beginners to experienced stitchers are welcome to join us! There are no specialty stitches in this project, and each frame will only require one color. If you have any questions about cross-stitch technique, there is a 'Stitching Advice' section in our Discord where you can ask for help.
How many frames will there be?
About 500 frames would complete the animation, but if the project runs out of steam before we can finish that, we'll put together however much we have. Each contributor can have up to three frames at any given time, and are free to request more when they finish one!
Is there a deadline?
Nope! We will be checking in with each participant every few months to keep everyone engaged, but there is no deadline for the project or for individual participants. We want this to be a fun, chill project, and we're very aware that it will take a long time, so don't stress over it! (If you can't be contacted for two consecutive check-ins, your frames will be reassigned.)
How long will this take?
Don't worry about it.
Where do I sign up?
The 'Sign Up Here' button below will take you to a Google form where you can apply!
If I have more questions, who can I reach out to?
You can send a Discord message to the moderators: Ophi_chus, kianhaynes, or PinkLemonadey. Alternatively, you can hop into one of Ophi's streams at twitch.tv/Ophi. They're usually on Monday-Friday at 7am to 12pm UTC.

Meet the Mods

We have three lovely moderators working on this project:

Ophi (they/she): Ophi is a crafting streamer on Twitch and a pixel artist. Their duties for this project include converting frames into patterns and assembling the animation. You can find their previous experience here: https://www.ophiuchus-art.com/

kianhaynes (they/he): Kian works on some odds and ends of the project to keep things running smoothly in the background, this includes setting up Spreadsheets, setting up some Discord stuff, helping establishing the stitching specifications that will make the animating stage easier, helping writing the Info Doc and more! You can find them at https://twitch.tv/kianhaynes or kianhaynes.bsky.social

PinkLemonadey (they/them): PinkLemonadey is just a little guy. They work on keeping things organized, giving cross-stitch advice, and providing comedic relief.
